Steel industry: practical ways to decarbonize

The transformation of the steel industry toward more climate-friendly production is one of the greatest challenges of the coming decades. Interest was correspondingly high at the 4th European Green Steel Summit 2026 in Düsseldorf, where leading steelmakers, technology providers, energy companies, and industry experts exchanged ideas on strategies and solutions for decarbonization. For ABP Induction, the event was an important opportunity to contribute its expertise in the fields of electrification and energy-efficient process solutions to the international professional discourse.

ABP was represented by Dr.-Ing. Marco Rische, Director of System Business, who, together with partner company H-Iron GmbH, had prepared a technical presentation titled “From Carbon Challenge to Carbon Opportunity: A Practical Path to Decarbonized Steel” – and delivered it on stage.

The presentation focused on the question of how the steel industry can achieve its ambitious climate goals without losing sight of its economic competitiveness. Despite numerous political initiatives and technological developments, practical experience shows that many decarbonization projects are slowed by high investment costs, long approval times or missing infrastructure.

In his presentation, Dr. Marco Rische made it clear that the transformation will not be achieved through a single technology. Rather, a combination of different solutions is needed to sustainably reduce emissions along the entire value chain of steel production.

A key focus of the presentation was the combination of H-Iron’s methane pyrolysis technology with ABP Induction’s electrification solutions. The technology developed by H-Iron enables the production of hydrogen from methane, resulting in solid carbon instead of CO2. It can then be reused as a recyclable material. This approach is complemented by ABP’s inductive heating technologies, which can replace fossil fuels in various thermal processes.

Using specific application examples, Dr. Marco Rische demonstrated how inductive technologies can already be used today in melting, heating, and heat treatment processes, thereby making an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. The key message was: Decarbonization doesn’t have to wait for the perfect solution of the future. Technologies already available today can help companies gradually reduce emissions while ensuring that their production processes remain cost-effective.

Participation in the European Green Steel Summit was important for ABP – because it underscores the role as a partner to the metallurgical industry in implementing sustainable production concepts. At the same time, the event offered numerous opportunities to network with representatives from leading steel companies, research institutions, and technology partners.
